Bukola Saraki, Ekweremadu Emerge Senate President, Deputy

0

Former governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki has emerged President of the Senate for the 8th National Assembly. His deputy is Senator ike Ekweremadu of the PDP, who was also the deputy president for the last assembly.

Saraki was appointed senate president after his candidacy was unopposed, a blow to efforts by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress to appoint Ahmed Lawan. It was evident that Saraki enjoys the support of the majority of senators following the backing of his candidacy by the PDP. The PDP also said it has adopted Yakubu Dogara for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, running against Femi Gbajabiamila, who is the candidate of the APC.

The National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, urged its senators and members-elect in the House of Representatives to support its candidates. It said,” The party therefore urges its senators and members-elect in the National Assembly to act accordingly.” The APC had conducted a primary, which produced Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila as official candidates for the positions of Senate President and House of Representatives Speaker. But Saraki’s supporters did not participate in this, and he said he did not recognize it. Dogara and his clique stormed out of the venue, saying the event was rigged to produce only one result.
