Sun Is Shining

Sun is Shining, by the Reggae Legend was the song that came to my mind this morning while driving through the Leeds City Centre. Immediately, I felt inspired to take some pictures of the sun against the city skyline and also do a small post on this wonder of nature – The Sun. Hence, the title “Sun Is Shining”, by M. Babajide-Alabi.

If you live in the UK, you will really appreciate my song and dance about the sun coming out this morning. Take for example, we woke up yesterday to a frosty morning and ended it with a rainy night. The temperature has been particularly low this week. So waking up to rays of sunlight is a sign that the Almighty Father is smiling on us.

It was a beautiful sight to behold in the city as the sun creeps from behind the tall office buildings. While a part of the buildings were brilliantly lit, some parts were contented with the shadow that fell on them. Looking through the office windows I could see that so many of them were bare of blinds (curtains) unlike yesterday. We all love the sun. We crave the sun. And when it comes to town, like this morning, you do not want to “shade” it out of the room or of your life too.

The “blaring” sun has come as a soothing relief to the miserable weather condition that prevailed over the Christmas and New Year Holidays, especially in some parts of Leeds and York. We all can recollect how many properties were destroyed in the flood that ravaged some streets in Leeds, York and many other cities. So seeing the sun come so high this morning, you can not but wonder at nature.

At this time of the year, we would all have been going about in our Parka Jackets and boots. The streets and houses would have all been covered in whites -snow, while we gingerly pick our ways through them. The kids would have been looking forward to the end of the school time, that is if the schools had not been shut due to heavy snowing. They would have looked forward all day to build snow man and stick carrot in his face. But things have changed. Its been a while we had a White Christmas in the UK.

I remember my first Christmas in the UK (at the turn of the millienium) in the freezing weather of Edinburgh. It snowed from almost through the month of December. I was excited walking through the snow, while my colleagues at work teased me if it ever snowed in Africa. Of course, it never.   We woke up to a White Christmas. There is something about a Christmas Day with the snow everywhere.

But all has changed in recent times.

Last night I watched a programme “Whats Wrong With Our Weather?” on BBC 4 where Dr Helen Czerski, a Physicist and John Hammond, a meteorologistx tried as much as they could to explain why the British weather had gone “crazy” in the past three years. It was an interesting watch as they tried to explain the impact of Jet Stream as being behind the unstable weather. Jet Stream, according to the Physicist is an invisible river of air that powers along ten kilometres above us in the sky.

However, in as much as they tried to explain nature, they still could not unravel the mystery.

Enjoy the lyrics to the song Sun is Shining, by Bob Marley.

“Sun is shining, the weather is sweet
Make you want to move your dancing feet
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know ya, where I stand(Monday morning) here I am
Want you to know just if you can
(Tuesday evening) where I stand
(Wednesday morning) tell myself a new day is rising
(Thursday evening) get on the rise a new day is dawning
(Friday morning) here I am
(Saturday evening) want you to know just
Want you to know just where I standWhen the morning gathers the rainbow
Want you to know I’m a rainbow tooSo, to the rescue here I am
Want you to know just if you can
Where I stand, know, know, know, know, knowWe’ll lift our heads and give Jah praises
We’ll lift our heads and give Jah praises, yeahSun is shining, the weather is sweet now
Make you want to move your dancing feet
To the rescue, here I am
Want you to know just if you can
Where I stand, know, know, know, where I standMonday morning, scoo-be-doop-scoop-scoop
Tuesday evening, scoo-be-doop-scoop-scoop
Wednesday morning, scoo-be-doop-scoop-scoop
Thursday evening, scoo-be-doop-scoop-scoop
Friday morning, scoo-be-doop-scoop-scoop
Saturday evening, scoo-be-doop-scoop-scoopSo to the rescue, to the rescue, to the rescue
Awake from your sleep and slumber
Today could be your lucky number
Sun is shining and the weather is sweet
