0

There is good new coming from Africa, albeit the just concluded elections into the position of the President of the African Development Bank (ADB). Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, the outgoing Minister of Agriculture was on Thirsday elected in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The election which took place at the Annual General Merrimg of the bank saw Adesina emerged winner among seven other contenders for the job.

His election to this post is a plus for the incoming government of Muhammad Bugari, who was reported to have thrown his support behind the candidature of Adesina. Buhari was reported by local media to have sent the former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to South Africa to lobby for Adesina’s candidacy.

It will be noted that Adesina has been touted as the. “most performed” minister in the Goodluck Jonathan government. His handling of the Agriculture Ministry brought much needed sanity and development to the sector. He was also able to curtail corruption that is endemic in the sector.

The expectation is that Dr. Adesina will continue this good work as he takes over the 5-year tenure Presidency of the ADB in September.
